Teacher guide ReSolve: Hot Streaks

TLF ID M025316

This sequence of two lessons students investigate streaks in statistical data. They develop tests for randomness in order to distinguish between random and non-random results and use their understanding of randomness to investigate the existence or otherwise of the 'hot streak' phenomenon in basketball. Each lesson is outlined in detail including curriculum links, discussion points, spreadsheets, internet resources and historical data. This sequence is part of the reSolve: Maths by Inquiry program.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This resource is extremely valuable for the year 9 mathematics content description about calculating relative frequencies from given or collected data to estimate probabilities of events involving 'and' or 'or'. Students explore relative frequencies of streaks in their own real and fake data and use this knowledge to investigate whether the phenomenon of 'hot streaks' in basketball is supported statistically, using historical data.
  • The resource is of value for supporting the Numeracy general capability. The lesson provides opportunities for students to compare, interpret and assess different data displays, including historical data from online sources and spreadsheets. Students also investigate how the actual results of chance events are not always the same as expected results and how this can be used in interpreting data sets.
  • This resource is also of pedagogical value as it supports teachers in building an inquiry-focused learning environment with authentic application of mathematical skills and understandings. The unit aims to develop content knowledge as well as assisting students to understand the process of inquiry.
